Descendant of YuanKeng Village

Yuan Keng Village begins with our earliest ancestor great (x5) grandfather Yi Zhao (奕兆) who married Lo’s and had 4 childrend, namely Shi Jun (世俊) , Shi Lun (世伦), Shi Wei (世伟) and Shi Ren(世任).

Among them, Shi Jun left the village and lost contact with the family.

According to our descendant record, great grandpa Yi Zhao’s sons were also named Fu Tong (复同), Fu Xing (复兴), Fu Ming(复明). Thus, Shi Lun also known as Fu Tong, but the other two names due to broken record after generation, we are not sure neither Shi Lun and Shi Wei’s which is Fu Xing nor Fu Ming respectively.

Pedigree chart

曾姓字辈

** ** The surname (or last name) of our family descendant has various English spelling after many generations, especially those who had migrated overseas. The spelling varies from Tsen, Chen, Chan, Tsang to Tse and etc…, but the Chinese character 曾 remains universal. For the purpose of easy reading, the word TSEN is used in the following article as the family's surname.
Genealogy is meant to study the links and trace the family tree, the order of family generations and histories.

The ‘given names’ (or first names) of the TSEN family clan consist of two Chinese characters; the first character demonstrates the order of generation in the family clan. By associating the Chinese character in the pedigree chart, we are able to trace the lineage and family tree of our ancestors; hence, we are able to determine which generation level we were born at.

The second character normally represents the distinct name or a person’s calling name, usually pronounced with the first character. Close or immediate relatives would avoid using the same given name once it is used by a new born.

In the ancient times, Chinese family clans that carry the same surname would look upon their pedigree chart earnestly and solemnly, particularly when recording their family’s genealogy.

During the time of Kangxi or K'ang Hsi, second Qing Emperor(1661-1722), the TSEN family 63th generation begin to use the pedigree chart conferred by the Sheng Zu Ren Emperor ancestor. The Chart consists of 3 sentences with 15 characters.

During the year 1912, General Yuan Shi Kai (some record said it was granted by the 67th generation of Confucius descendant Ling Yi) granted the TSEN Family with another set of pedigree chart, which consist of 4 sentences with 10 characters.

建道敦安定,懋修肇彝常,蔚文焕景瑞,永锡世绪昌。

Before the TSEN family clan uses the common pedigree chart, TSEN in different area of china doesn’t have a reference for their order of generation. The Lung San (龙山) people, which is one of the ethnic group use ,

奎璧呈云瑞,人文焕国华;召衡思继武,鼎甲励承家。
一贯书绅永,千秋锡福遐;眙谋资燕翼,世业仰清嘉。

as their pedigree chart.

Each character in the chart represents a family generation, and the character was used to associate the level of linage in the family tree. This will allow us to determine whether we should address our relative as our elder, equal or younger generation.

Currently, by using the pedigree chart provided, we are able to trace back 8th generation of our family tree who originate from Yuan Keng Village.

Descendant in each Family Tree

General situation (migration) in each family tree


Qi Guang(曾棋光) had 4 sons :

En Wei (恩蔚)、En Qin(恩钦)、En Chong(恩崇)、En Sheng(恩生)



En Qin、En Chong、En Sheng migrated to North Borneo during 1902, their descendants were then migrated to other countries.

En Wei was called by the Tsung Tsin Mission of Hong Kong in 1926, and transferred to Hong Kong for missionary work.

Since then, En Wei’s family had their base in Hong Kong and their descendants gradually migrated and settled at USA, Canada, Australia, and Malaysia.

One of the daughter Yu Jiao( 玉娇) married Liao’s (廖)from DongLing Village(栋岭村),the Liao’s descendants were then migrated to Canada.



Qi Fang(曾其芳) had 2 sons

En Kai(恩开)and En Lin(恩霖)


The brothers settled at YuanKeng Village, some of their descendants had moved to nearby provinces, towns and cities, some as far as XinJiang( 新疆).

Those who moved to XinJiang are En Kai's sons and daughters.


Qi Rong(曾其荣) had 6 sons

En Fu(恩福)、En Shou(恩寿) 、En Pei (恩培)、En Zhen(恩拯)、En Zhang(恩彰)、En Yong(恩永)


The six brothers all migrated to Guangzhou, Mei Xian or nearby city like Hong Kong, some of their descendants had migrated oversea, some moved to XinJiang.


Qi Lan(曾其兰) had 3 sons

En Quan(恩泉)、En Yang(恩洋)、En Yuan(恩源)

En Yuan had move away from the family and lost contact, En Quan and En Yang migrated to Singapore and Malaysia, their descendants situation were unknown.



Qi Zhen (曾其祯) had 4 sons

En Fo(恩和)、En Pin(恩平)、En Shen(恩深)、En Hua(恩华)

En Foh left YuanKeng village and moved to nearby ZiJin Province(紫金县), he had been living at Singapore and Malaysia for a short while. Most of his descendants were reside at ZiJin, some moved to Hong Kong and oversea.

The other 3 sons En Pin, En Shen, En Hua migrated to North Borneo during the 1910s to 1920s, some of their descendants had then migrated to other countries as well.



Qi Xiang(曾其祥) had 3 sons

En Min(恩明)、En Jun(恩俊)、En De(恩德) 、En Lu(恩禄)

En Jun settled at YuanKeng village, his descendants had then moved to nearby villages, towns and cities.

En Min move to ZiJin province to make a living, his descendants had moved to hong kong , migrated to North Borneo and oversea countries.

En De at one time had brought his family to North Borneo, but later moved back and settled down at ZiJin province.

En Lu migrated to North Borneo, his descendants had then migrated to oversea and other countries.



Qi Li (曾其礼) had 2 sons

En Ba(恩拔|)、En Cheng (恩成)

Both the brother’s descendant settled at YuanKeng village, some had moved to ZiJin province to make a living.

One of Qi Li daughter’s name En Chong (恩宠)married Chen’s (陈氏)from ZiJin ZhongXinBa(中心霸).The family then migrated to North Borneo.

History of Church and YuanKeng

Taken from “Tsung Tsin Mission of Hong Kong 150th anniversary” (基督教香港崇真会150周年纪念特刊) Special issue, starts from page 37 .

The Chinese PinYin is used to illustrate the Chinese name.
Reverend Li Li Ji (黎力基) learned that believers in Zhang's village (樟村) of Wu Hua District (五华县) were in sorrow of persecution, and thus, he decided to travel to the village to find out the exact situation.

In September of the year 1863, he started his journey from Hong Kong, along the way ,he passed by Gu Zhu(古竹),Zi Jin (紫金),Zhong Xin Ba(中心霸),Chang Bu(长布),YuanKeng (源坑) ,Zhan Yuan (粘元)and arrived at Zhang Village(彰村).

His journey to Zhang’s Village marked crucial developments in missionary work at WuHua District. After his journey to Zhang’s Village, he travelled back to Hong Kong. He then wrote a letter to the body of missionaries, to seek funding for the costs to build a Church at Yuan Keng, as well as requesting a pastor to be stationed at Zhang’s Village (樟村).

The gospel was then spread from Zhang and Yuan Keng villages to the nearby areas within a short period of time. The gospel reaches to places like; Lung Chuan (龙川) ,ZiJin (紫金) ,Mei distrct (梅县) ,and XinNing (兴宁) 。

The mission’s focus of the body of missionaries in China has then shifted from BaoAn, Hong Kong (香港,宝安) to the north-east part of Guangdong province.

In Year 1857, Xu Fu Guang(徐复光), Zeng Fu Xing(曾复兴) and etc went to YuanKeng(源坑)and ZanYuan (粘元), they were then having Sunday service by rotation in each family’s home.

In Year 1857, Reverend Li Li Ji (黎力基) passed by Gu Zhu (古竹),Zi Jin (紫金),Zhong Xin Ba(中心霸),Chang Bu(长布),YuanKeng (源坑) ,Zhan Yuan(粘元) and finally arrived at Zhang’s Village. He seeks the help from the officers to protect the believers; he then stationed at YuanKeng for a month.

In Year 1865, Reverend (毕牧师) who stationed at Zhang’s Village (樟村) , nurtured the believers, as well as built YuanKeng’s hall and school.

In Year 1866, the gospel was spread progressively to nearby district by Reverend Bi (毕牧师) who stationed at YuanKeng. YuanKeng has its primary school, Lang Kou( 浪口 ) has its church, while GuZhu (古竹) has its own worship hall.

In Year 1868, Zhang’s Village (樟村) established CunZhen(存真) Girls School, while YuanKeng established its own secondary school.

In Year 1873, YuanKeng built a secondary school, while GuZhu (古竹) Church was found this year 。

In Year 1877, YuanKeng re-established its preaching hall.

In Year 1888, YuanKeng hold a mission festival, thousands turned up.

In Year 1889, YuanKeng and Li Lang (李朗) convened conference of the two places committees.

In Year 1907, YuanKeng Secondary school moved to GuZhu(古竹) and established a teacher’s college.

In Year 1916, YuanKeng hosted the 50th anniversary festival.

In 1927, YuanKeng Secondary School was closed.

In Year 1934, YuanKeng and GuZhu(古竹) churches manage independently.

Appendices:
After the year of 1864, the seeds of gospel has spread from Yuan Keng and Zhang’s Village (樟村) to the nearby areas, such as; Lung Chuan (龙川) ,ZiJin(紫金),Mei distrct(梅县),and XinNing(兴宁)。

Hello Everyone,



I am Samuel Tsen, the leading administrator of this website. This website was set up on the 16th of March 2009 and is currently maintained by the overseas descendants of YuanKeng Village from Sabah. I am one of the members among the overseas descendants from YuanKeng Village, currently residing at KotaKinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. I am the son of Alfred Tsen, grandson of Tsen Ket Nam, and great grandson of Tsen En Qing(恩钦). I am the third generation who were born in Sabah.

This website is inspired by Rev. Dr. Chen Lip Siong, whom is my uncle as well as son of Ket Yue(国岳), and grandson of the late En Hua(恩华). The main purpose of this website is to compile our overseas descendants’ information from Yuan Keng Village, ChangBu town, WuHua district, MeiZhou City, GuangDong Province, China.

Ever since the migration in the 1900s, our overseas descendants had almost lost contact with each other, and consequently do not know the root of their own family’s ancestry. For instance, I had no idea that my great-grandfather En Qing was actually the second group of overseas Chinese, who were recruited to volunteer in land reclamation by British Colonial government at North Borneo.

This information is crucial to our next generation, and therefore should be preserved in written records. An example of a written record is the pedigree chart that is used by our family in naming the next generation, which to my knowledge there are many Tzee (子) among our relatives, but I have no idea on its usage or the history of it. Our ancestors often used the following naming procedures when choosing a child’s name.

My sister, Tzee Mui who teaches at a university met a student whose name is Tzee (Nee - not actual name) but is not sure if we are actually relatives based on the key element “Tzee” from our pedigree chart or it may be just coincidence.

The records of our family’s genealogy are now online, and we wish to use this channel to keep in contact with each other. These records may also serve as references, or for tracing our ancestors and naming our next generation. The intention is to keep our genealogies of families from around the world updated as soon as we receive any information. We will use this website to announce any new additions, and also to inform of any deaths among our family members.

Most of the information published in this website was provided by my grand uncle, Ket Fu (国桴), son of the late En Wei (恩蔚), and grandson of the late Qi Guang (其光). He has taken almost 10 years to compile all information, mainly from speaking with relatives, the cultural practices by telling stories and passing down cultural information to the next generation. This was the way most of our ancestors received the stories of their elders before written language.

He published the 1st ever copy of the family’s tree booklet in handwriting on November 1988. Hence, there may be some errors occurred. The information was later typed into soft copy by my aunt Grace Tsen in 2009, she is the youngest sister of Rev.Dr.Chen Lip Siong. How our ancestor believe in Jesus

In the early 1860s, the gospel spread through Yuan Keng Village. Our first ancestor Yi Zhao (奕兆公) had four children, one of them left the village.

Among the three brothers who live in the village, two of them has came to believe in Jesus, the other brother made his living by serving as a Fung Shui Master in the village.

One day, the buffalo that worked for the two brother’s paddy field fallen sick, after consuming some poisoned grass, it stomach got swollen.

The brothers felt helpless, they don’t know how to pray, but they knew a song that they learned from their pastor, and started singing. The title of the song is “耶稣先我往”.

The rhythm sound like this… “11⒎1 2— 1232 1-34 5432 3-2- 11232 1 ⒎1- ⒎— 11⒎1 2— 1232 1— ” (The author rewrote this in memory, it doesn’t match the music scroll)

The two brothers kneel down and sing it repeatedly and the other brother who was the Feng Shui Master laugh at them and said: “ If the buffalo would be heal by singing this song over and over again, I will dump all my Fung Shui instrument and follow you both to believe in Jesus.”

After a while, a hoarse sound came out from the back of the buffalo, releasing gases, the poisons gases inside the stomach of the buffalo had secreted outward, and the buffalo was healed completely.

The brother who was the Fung Shui Master had came to know the Lord after that incident, therefore three of the brothers had believed in Jesus and leads the entire villages to believed in Jesus too.

The oversea descendant of YuanKeng Village in Sabah held its 1st family gathering on 12 March, 2009 after migrated for over 120 years.

There were about 100 attendees including Tsang Lap Wah from Hong Kong, who pay his 1st visit to Sabah.

The ancestor of 曾 family that reside in Sabah was the second group of overseas Chinese, who were recruited to volunteer in land reclamation by British Colonial government at North Borneo.

The event was published in the local Chinese newspaper and received many responses from party that carry the same surname requesting to set up an association.

Nonetheless, our organizing committee’s priority is to get in touch with relatives from YuanKeng Village.

For the time being, we are in an effort to gather as many relatives as possible who is the descendant from the village.
